High School Soccer

Many referees also choose to officiate high school soccer. It offers some of the most exciting (and best paid) opportunities for officiating in our region. It requires a separate registration with the New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA). The rules used - set by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) - are slightly different to the IFAB / USSF Laws of the Game, but it is easy to adapt once you recognize the educational context of the games.

Under NMAA, we are the SW Region soccer referee group (and part of the New Mexico Officials Association - NMOA). In addition to officiating games in Las Cruces, we can be assigned (if we wish) to games at high schools in our region: from Deming and Silver City in the west to Ruidoso in the east, and from T or C in the north to Chaparral and Santa Teresa in the south.

NMAA sets the minimum age for high school referees at 16.

To register as a high school official, follow these four easy steps:

1. Contact Us

The process will go quicky and smoothly with a helping hand from either:

2. Sign Up
  • Sign-up at dragonflymax.com. You will pay a modest registration fee but there is no training or testing requirement associated with registering - this comes later.

  • If you didn't already contact assignor Dreaux Plair, make sure to do so now.

3. Download the smartphone apps
  • The Dragonfly smartphone app is the most convenient way to receive and accept your assignments and communicate with your crew members.

  • There is also a NFHS soccer rules app, but you will also receive a free printed copy.

4. Start Refereeing!
  • Referees attend regularly scheduled online and in-person training sessions before and during the season. These are especially important for new high school referees. We focus on the sometimes subtle (but critical) differences between the NFHS Rules and the Laws of the Game we employ in other competitions.
